Yoshi, make a chest and dump all your stuff in it. Get the minimap mod and make yourself a waypoint for where you are, come back when you can establish a safe route. Try dropping sand or gravel to block out water and take loads of ladders to get back out that way
next tie you find an ore like diamond they can be diagonal from each other so for god sake dig around

Yoshi you should make 2 ender chest, one to keep in your house and another to keep with you when you go caving so you can put your stuff in the chest, so you have more room for ores.
